UK pulls the plug on the Gillispie era

When Tubby Smith was fired from UK, rumors swirled about Billy D leaving to go there. Two years later, with UF's program in much worse shape, will they make a move for him again? Do you think he would consider it?

Nope. link

Also, Anthony Grant to Bama.link

Think UK would go for former player Travis Ford? Or is he not established enough yet?

Latest on UK is Calipari as of today. Memphis has given UK permission to talk, but will do everything they can to keep him.

And what a great opportunity for Grant! Great guy, key player in our first NC with the '04s. Class guy who made VCU a player again. I think he'll get a relatively long leash at Bama considering the current state of the program (no discipline, average recruiting, poor support). There's a LOT of work to do there, but fans on the Bama message boards are extremely supportive (well, except the delusional ones that thought Mike Anderson from Mizzou would take the job).

So now we have former Gator assistants Grant and Pelphrey coaching the opposition in the SEC.

I didn't know VCU was ever a player! lol, just kidding.

In all fairness, Grant is a great coach and should have Alabama up and running within two years.

Also, doesn't coach Cal seem like a perfect fit for Kentucky? Shouldn't we be REALLY afraid of this? This is not a good thing for the Florida program...

He does seem like a good fit and no, not a good thing for UF. You've gotta wonder how many skeletons are in his closet, though. I mean the UMASS stuff is still there and he CONSISTENTLY has 5-star players rotating through MEMPHIS/CUSA? The talent level he recruits to mid-major programs just doesn't add up to "clean program." Just a feeling...

Grant did a good job with VCU. But Capel had built them up already. Let's not get revisionist here.

Here he's taking over because someone got fired. At VCU he took over because someone jumped to OU, and Capel (though you could argue, Blake Griffin) had them as a 2 seed this year.

I said probably 8 years ago that Grant was going to be the one to ever replace Billy D if he left for UK (back when I thought it was still a possibility. It's not any more)... Most of the focus was on Pelphrey being a HC, and rightfully so, but Grant has ties to Miami, and in observing the way he coached up players in game he always seemed like it was just a matter of time before he was a HC, too.

So now all we need to Larry Shyatt to Georgia and Donnie Jones to some other SEC opening, and Donovan 'disciples' would claim half the league.
