This guy may be full of it, but it is depressing to read the facts and quotes. Do you guys see him jumping if Cholly bites the dust at Notre Dame?
I think Meyer would seriously consider it if he were to win another NC. He would have proven himself while becoming a household name. National recruiting would be a piece of cake with his recognition and reputation.
I'll tell you why it won't happen. I don't see how Notre Dame could get rid of Cholly with the contract he has.
I want Meyer to be here for 10+ years, but I fear he'll be gone before we know it.
Hopefully the thing that changes for Meyer is him thinking Notre Dame is his dream job. I don't think he qualifies as an Urban Legend yet. He needs to stick around a little longer to make that happen. He would be putting his chance to become a legend at risk by leaving. You know he can't put Notre Dame on top like he can the Gators. I think he might actually be brewing some loyalty to us.
But just in case let's hope Cholly's contract stays solid.
Urban had his shot for Notre Dame last time. He passed.
However, I was writing a blog that I was told could jinx us, so I am holding it back. But what I was going to say was that IF we win another title, Urban will absolutely have nothing left to achieve in college football (well, he could chase that elusive undefeated season that we've never had) and would jump at a big-time NFL job if it was a good opportunity. Ultra-competitive people need to be constantly striving for something, and climbing new mountains is more exciting than constantly climbing the same mountain.
Urban to ND? Very, very doubtful. On his end, but also for the Charlie "Frass" Weis' contract situation you described. This is why I, among many others, laughed when he got the enormous contract extension (with gigantic buyout) after a "close loss" to USC.
Urban to the Cowboys? Now, I'm worried. When he took the UF job he said something along the lines of 'ten years at one place is a long time', and if he doesn't go now he'll be halfway there. And IF we were to win the SEC/BCS, he will have gone 4-0 v FSU/UT, 3-1 v UGA, won 2 SEC titles, 2 BCS titles, coached at least one Heisman winner... basically, unless he's extremely motivated by keeping his 'football machine' cranking on all cylinders, no one could really blame him if he wants to try a new challenge.
Syracuse loss not good for ol' Charlie. But really, that's an expensive buyout. No way he gets fired, which means no way Meyer is even offered the ND job. And, ND is really a lateral move, at best, from UF. Only way Meyer goes is a top notch NFL job, like Dallas. Oakland is definitely a step down, St Louis might be, and Detroit definitely is (though Urban admits to wanting 12 WR)...
hm. As an ND fan, I don't now what to think. BUT - If I was Urban I would think about this. Stay at UF, where he has already one ONE National Championship and is on the road to a possibly second one. Could have an amazing team next year, OR.......You go to Notre Dame and clean the that HORRIBLE UGLY MESS in South Bend?
Some more links about Charlie Weis, the first one raises the conspiracy theory that Weis isn't meeting with the AD until after ND can meet with Urban Meyer. Meyer has a clause in his contract that has something to do with his season being over (after the Bama game).
Some internet chatter says he won't leave UF until his kids are done with school (youngest is 10, we are good for a while) because he doesn't want to move his family any more. More opinion is that he wouldn't take an NFL job because he is so family-oriented, and NFL guys don't have some of the limits on practicing, etc. that college coaches have. (though, if you've read Meat Market, you know that recruiting is a huge deal, and NFL guys don't have to do that) And film study is of indefinite length in both cases. Take it for what it's worth.
So I don't think we have anything to worry about. Not that I ever was, if you scroll up you can read where I'm more worried about good NFL jobs (read: not the Rams, Chiefs, Lions, etc) like the Cowboys, Chargers coming open. Not only is Weis probably not going anywhere, if he was, Urban isn't taking the job. He had the same opportunity 4 years ago, what would be different now?
Much to the chagrin of Peter Kerasotis at Florida Today and some idiot named "Lisa Horne" who posted some drivel on a FOX Sports blog, Meyer's staying at Florida and has no plans to leave in the immediate future.
What really drives me crazy is that some of these sportswriters don't fully comprehend what they read and hear; thus they put their own spin on a story regardless of what the facts are. This only creates more friction all around, and could even cause some damage as far as recruiting goes.
I'll be glad when this settles down for awhile; it's beyond tiresome!
