First connection I've heard for a head coaching job for Mullen:
New Mexico. Here's a Gator blog on the subject:
link.
The connection to New Mexico is Urban Meyer is expected to have input on the hire- the new AD at New Mexico hired UM while at Bowling Green.
My gut is that if Mullen leaves, it has to be for a bigger job than this. Unless he thinks he can do the 2-year turnaround thing and then land a really big time job. Still, I think the reason Mullen (and Strong, for that matter) haven't left yet is because they are top assistants at a top program, something that might be more prestigious than being a head coach at some of this smaller, non-BCS schools. Now, if Kyle Whittingham jumps from Utah, would Mullen go back up there? At least Utah, with now 2 BCS bowls in 5 years, is on the national radar. I just don't see New Mexico being the appropriate level of job to leap into a head coaching position.
Like I said, unless Mullen thinks he can play NM into an even bigger job a couple years from now, I just don't see this happening. But, he was only a QBs coach at BG and Utah before Mike Sanford jumped to UNLV, so maybe there is some thought that he won't be jumping straight into the fire, and can 'learn on the job' a little more easily in Albuquerque than, say, Knoxville or Clemson.
