ACC Fantasy Guide 2010 PDF Print E-mail

The final section in my preview of each BCS conference's fantasy prospects is the ACC. The entire draft guide is here.

Team Sleeper Position
Boston College Dave Shinskie QB
Clemson Jamie Harper RB
FSU Bert Reed WR
Maryland Da'Rel Scott RB
NC State Dean Haynes RB
Wake Forest Ted Stanchitas QB
Duke Brett Huffman TE
Georgia Tech Josh Nesbitt QB
Miami Richard Gordon TE
UNC Jheranie Boyd WR
Virginia Tim Smith WR
Va Tech Darren Evans RB

BC's Dave Shinskie was the rare 25 year-old freshman (he washed out after 7 years in minor league baseball), giving him an edge in physical maturity and life experience over his league mates. BC is a steady source of production, though I doubt Shinksie will be spectacular, he's worth watching as the season develops, and worth a flier in ACC-only leagues.

Clemson's Jamie Harper is going to be the next in line of their great run on running backs. CBS has him rated 24th among BCS running backs, but obviously the potential is there for him to finish much higher.

Florida State's Bert Reed is another guy to watch- it seems to me that Jimbo Fisher has targeted him to elevate his game this season, and with it the Noles offense. He could end up the #1 ACC WR for the season, provided the recent reports of him being &in the dog house& are Fisher playing mind games with Reed. Email all of these articles to your league mates, then snag him later in the draft where he cold represent fantastic value.

Maryland's Da'Rel Scott is a senior now, and healthy after missing six games last season. I'm targeting him as an ACC RB that could potentially make a leap forward this season. NC State's Dean Haynes is on the other end of the spectrum. The redshirt freshman was only recently moved over to offense from corner (where he was a middle of the pack recruit), and even more recently named the starter. The fact that O'Brien has already seen enough to vault him above true freshman Mustafa Greene [insert Lion King joke here] and pre-camp starter Curtis Underwood is either an indictment of the other guys or a positive sign for Haynes. In an ACC-only league, stash Haynes on your bench in case he's the real deal.

Wake Forest is turning to QB Ted Stanchitas to replace Riley Skinner... and Stanchitas has experience replacing great QBs, as he took over for Tim Tebow at Nease. Stanchitas is a sleeper simply because of his proximity to The Chosen One.

Duke throws the ball quite a bit, and redshirt Senior Brett Huffman could see a lot of action. He's a matchup play in ACC-only leagues for now, but if new QB Renfree begins to lean on him, you'll want to take notice in more formats.

I still have no idea why Georgia Tech's Josh Nesbitt is so underrated by CBS' default rankings. Since when does losing a WR- or any player, for that matter- seem to negatively impact Paul Johnson's offense? Nesbitt has another year of experience under his belt running the triple option, and I'm snagging him as a sneaky backup QB very late in CBS drafts, because he's so far down the rankings. The guy was in the top 10 in 2009 scoring among QBs returning for 2010!

Randy Shannon (when he's not crying about late field goals) has been promoting TE Richard Gordon as a breakout player. Gordon has previously been known as a blocking TE, and there are a lot of options there- including some highly touted recruits in the freshman class- but if Shannon's going to give him first crack at being the top TE option, there's value in ACC-only leagues. If Jacory Harris resists his Grossman/Favre gene and starts making some shorter, safer passes... he who wins the TE job in Miami is going to benefit. It's a position battle I'll be monitoring.

UNC's Jheranie Boyd should see increased action because, unlike Greg Little and virtually his entire team, he is not involved in the NCAA investigation. The bad news? Maybe Boyd isn't ready to live up to his recruiting hype yet (he's a sophomore), because if he was it wouldn't have taken suspensions to get him on the field for an offensive unit that clearly needs help.

There's a new staff at Virginia, and new HC Mike London supposedly likes his WRs. I'll bet on Tim Smith to be the breakout, if only because he's the speedster of the group.

Virginia Tech's Darren Evans is being overlooked by many, as in his 2009 absence (due to injury) then-freshman Ryan Williams burst onto the scene. Evans was a rushing fiend in his own right in 2008, so it will be interesting to see how the carries are distributed between the two as the season goes along. Evans is worth stashing on your bench in case he grabs most of the carries, or Williams suffers an injury of his own.

Position Scarcity

The ACC is one of the least scarce leagues, in my opinion. By that I mean they have a good number of relevant fantasy options at every position. Despite the Colorado Rockies' best efforts, Russell Wilson and Kyle Parker are back this season, deepening a conference QB pool which should go at least 6 deep. WR is one of the scarcest positions across college fantasy this season, but again there are some more interesting and proven options in the ACC than some other conferences. Running back will of course be loaded, and is led by Virginia Tech's elite tandem.

I expect BCS league rosteers will be full of ACC players. If you're in an ACC-only league, there should be plenty of options with which to fill your squad.
