First in the breakdowns by conference this season are the Independents. The short version? Navy has some intriguing rushing prospects, Notre Dame (despite the fact that they suck) should put up offensive stats, and Army pretty much sucks all around. But you knew that. On to more specific details...
Here are my sleepers for independent teams:
| Team |
Sleeper |
Position |
| Army |
Davyd Brooks |
WR |
| Navy |
Vince Murray |
RB |
| Notre Dame |
Dayne Crist |
QB |
Brooks is a sleeper in that he may be a matchup play in smaller leagues. Murray is outside CBS' projections for a top 30 RB in BCS leagues, but I feel he is a sleeper in that he'll get you lots of production during weeks in which your other players are inside conference play.
The most controversial inclusion on this list is Crist. That's because CBS has him as a top 13 QB for BCS leagues, and I feel he could very well be a top 5 QB this season. Brian Kelly likes to throw- a lot- and I expect with the state of their program he'll be trying to score as many points as possible to let recruits know 'Notre Dame is back'.
You're unlikely to be in an Independents-only league, and there are only three independents this season, so position scarcity, etc. aren't factors when talking about the Independents.
I called out Ricky Dobbs as a sleeper last year, and I'm still in love with him. I'm fully on board the 'Dobbs for Heisman' bandwagon. He's worth owning in virtually every league, if only because, like Murray, his big scoring weeks ought to be when other QBs are facing tougher in-conference competition. |
