The Gators relieved some red zone pressure this weekend, scoring 3 of their 4 offensive touchdowns from outside the red zone, including Tebow’s 23-yard TD run that broke the 27-year old SEC rushing TD record, previously held by University of Georgia RB Herschel Walker, at 49 TD. Tebow would add another TD to end the day at 51 total rushing TDs, setting the SEC record in his hometown. “Just to be mentioned in the same breath as Herschel Walker, it’s extremely humbling and al little breathtaking because it’s Herschel Walker”, remarked Tebow.
Tebow also finished the first half with 63 yards rushing, breaking the SEC record for career rushing yards by a quarterback, previously held by former Arkansas QB Matt Jones with 2,535 yards. Tebow moved into third place in SEC history for the most touchdowns, rushing and receiving, ever scored, behind Walker (52) and Kevin Faulk of LSU (53).
Caleb Sturgis’ 56-yard field goal in the second quarter was the second-longest in school history.
Georgia fell to 4-4, the first time since 1996 the Bulldogs have been 0.500 or worse this late in the season.
Moderately interesting stat: This year marks the first year that Georgia did not defeat Florida the year after the Gators won the national championship (1997, 2007), just like LSU this year.
76 of the 87 Florida/Georgia games have been played in Jacksonville, FL. The 1994 and 1995 games were played in Gainesville and Athens, respectively (a 52-14 Gator win and a 52-17 Gator win). Renovations to then-Alltel Stadium (now Jacksonville Municipal Stadium) forced the game out of Jacksonville, not that any Gator fans minded the home and away blowouts. Below are the locations the game has been played and the Gators record:
Athens, GA: 1-4
Gainesville, FL: 1-2
Jacksonville, FL: 36-39-1
Savannah, GA: 1-0-1
Tampa, FL: 0-1
