This morning, I saw an interesting tweet from our friend @DK_Thompson, which pointed me to this article.
According to the article, Paxton Lynch, a 6'6'', 225 lb. QB at Trinity Christian in Jacksonville earned the start in a recent Central Florida All-Star game, where he impressed the coaches during the practice week, and then completed 9 of 12 passes for 237 yards and 2 TDs. He supposedly has an offer from FAMU, and from Florida Tech's new D-II program (which isn't scheduled to start playing until 2013). Quotes from Lynch's father indicate he has received interest from UCF, USF, Temple, Indiana, and Florida. He says ''Florida's showing some of the strongest interest right now'', and the article states that Lynch will take an official visit to Florida on Jan. 27th. Lynch was injured for much of his senior year.
Could the Florida Gators add a QB in the class of 2012?
There are many reasons why Lynch may not end up at Florida. The Gator coaching staff has a lot of big-time prospects on their radar for the class of 2012, and could be using all of those scholarships. In addition, with two rising sophomore QBs, the program seems to have at least a little bit of depth in the area, and certainly enough to where they don't need to compete with FAMU and Florida Tech (alma mater of the immortal Tim Wakefield) for a guy that ESPN has not awarded ANY stars or otherwise given any information on their recruit profile page. As recently as yesterday, Derek Tyson of ESPN's GatorNation in a chat said, ''It doesn't appear the Gators will take a QB in this class.''
However, there are a few reasons to think seeing Lynch in a Gator uniform may be a real possibility. Lynch was called a ''sleeper'' during a regional Elite 11 QB camp last March. The Daytona Beach News-Journal article indicated that Lynch could be waiting until Signing Day or later to see if any of the FBS level schools offer him a scholarship. The Gators have plenty of scholarships and roster spots available, and if some late announcements don't go their way, the staff could be willing to grab some under-the-radar types to fill in some holes on the roster: and lets face it, QB play in Gainesville has been far from stellar. As we briefly discussed in our look at next year's roster, even if one guy emerges, the other may transfer. Last signing day was the first time most of us had heard of Muschamp targets Tevin Westbrook and Graham Stewart, and Stewart was last seen scoring a TD off of a blocked punt in the Gator Bowl. If the numbers fall a certain way, and Muschamp and Co. are confident in their evaluation of Lynch, this staff has shown they are not afraid to add some of this sort of sleeper talent. Paxton Lynch seems to be a name for recruitniks to watch closely in the coming weeks.
Update: According to quotes in this article on Indiana football recruiting, it appears that Paxton Lynch would jump at a Florida offer. Maybe not that surprising, and it's a big unknown if Muschamp and Co. will even offer at this time. |
