Embarassingly Bad Orlando Sentinel Poll PDF Print E-mail

WTF, mate? link

OS Poll actually asks 'Is the Gators v. Vols game the most anticipated in Swamp History?'

I'm flying back for the game, but that's only because it's one of two decent home matchups this year, and Thanksgiving is a generally a prohibitively expensive flight (plus if I stay in Dallas I get the Cowboys and tailgating on Turkey Day, but let's move on).

Note my comment on the OS page:

This is a joke, right?

This wouldn't even be in my top 30.

The more embarassing thing is that 22 people voted for this game!

I would say it's not the most anticipated THIS SEASON (FSU, Tebow Senior Day, plus best team to visit Swamp this year) or the most anticipated in the (short) history of this rivalry... behind 95, 97, 99, and 01, at the least. I'd even argue for 07 UT ahead of this one, because I would say there was greater anticipation to see Tebow as a starter in his first SEC game than this likely bloodbath. And 05 was Meyer's first &big& game.

The poll has a pretty good list of games, otherwise. I threw down the gauntlet, so now I'm going to have to come up with 30 more anticipated games. Hint: I'll actually put Spurrier, Meyer, and even Zook coaching debuts on this list ahead of this weekend's game. Who wasn't looking forward to seeing new coaching staffs? (disclaimer: these are the only coaching changes in my memory-creating lifetime)

I voted for the 01 UT game, though I'm not 100% sold on it. My thinking about that game was that whichever team won was going to be favored against LSU for the SEC Title, with a shot at Pasadena. Sure, the winner of the UF-UT game is always a favorite to reach Atlanta, but this game was moved to December because of 9/11... so it was fairly close to that &National Semifinal& feel that UF-Bama had in ATL in 08.

Other games not in the poll I've thought of real quickly:

1991 FSU: What if I told you this would be a matchup between hated rivals, including two top 5 teams? Is that something you'd be interested in?

1993 FSU: Noles were #1, Gators #7... we lost, they win the NC. Two guys who eventually win the Heisman on the field.

1994 Georgia: Considering we never get them in the Swamp. Sure, the game was a blowout, but including THIS WEEKEND'S game on the list means we don't care if they are blowouts.

2006 LSU: #5 v. #10. Sorry, matchups between two top ten teams are going to beat out this Kiffin BS, every time. We won the title, LSU was the media's golden boy squad who 'got hot' at the end of the season and was included in people's argument for a playoff.

2008 LSU: What if I told you this would be a matchup between the last two National Champions? Is that something you'd be interested in?

Almost any other game I can think of involving two ranked teams. Several more Auburn games. The Alabama game I wrote about here. This is too easy.

Check back later this week for my full list of 30. Note, including EVERY OTHER GAME in the OS poll, we've gotten to 20+ more anticipated games, without breaking a sweat.

Orlando Sentinel, I'm embarassed by your sensationalism.

Embarassingly Bad Orlando Sentinel Poll

I'm not really sure how you could research it, but finding out what tickets were selling for before a game could help determine this as well. I distinctly remember some of those 90s Tennessee and FSU games having tickets to the game and my friends calling me crazy for not selling them because people were paying $500 outside the stadium for one no questions asked. Considering what the dollar is doing right now and the fact it was a decade ago, it would be like $700 now. This wasn't the price someone posted on stubhub (internet barely existed as a national presence at that point) but what you could get just walking around with your tickets up.

The game for me that the most insane pre-game atmosphere was the Miami game in 2002. It was a combination of many things that made it special.

1) Ron Zook's first big home game

2) Miami playing in the swamp for the first time in 20 years, restarting a rivalry that was huge in the 70s and 80s

3)It was an in-state game where you had many fans from both teams traveling, and everyone knew that the outcome of the game would affect in-state recruiting tremendously

4) Miami was the #1 team in the nation, and the defending national champions, with a team loaded with future NFL stars.

5) Rex Grossman was still the starting QB at Florida, fresh off a few incredible years, and looking forward to the Heisman race

Yeah, the Miami game was definitely one I thought of after submitting a quick list.

It's just shocking to me that someone could even be comparing that sort of game to this one.

It bothered me so much for two main reasons:

1. It reflects poorly on Gator fans. Sure, journalists aren't really supposed to Gator fans (at a paper like OS, but we at gatorsfirst.com are NOT journalists, and are definite fans), but it's coming from the OS Gators section... meaning it's going to reflect on Gator fans. And everyone gets caught up in using the superlative (i.e. to be the most/best/worst/biggest/etc. of all time) in regard to the most recent game, player, etc. The 2009 game in the poll is going to get a high number of votes from uneducated fans (read: people who don't frequent intelligent places for Gator discussion, like gatorsfirst.com), and make it look like we Gator fans as a whole lack perspective or have only been fans since 2007.

2. Overhyping this game. Look, we're going to win, probably big... but the last two years have sort of gone that way as well. Kiffin said some dumb things, but he's not the first (and won't be the last) to do so. And that alone doesn't make this game enter any sort of "most anticipated of all time" list. Not when there's been so many hyped matchups between top 5 and top 10 teams, with something actually on the line.

Making the argument that this is an anticipated game means that Tennessee is relevant in this college football season, and though I don't want to insult their fans who I enjoy reading and interacting with (Clay Travis, BSXtravaganza, and Jai Eugene of Loserswithsocks among them)... UT just isn't significant in the SEC race this season.

----
I'll try to make my central point as clear as possible in my closing remarks:

Supposedly the entire reason Kiffin (if you subscribe to the evil genius theory) would make such comments is to "get Tennessee on the map", and get recruits excited about their future. They are not in a position at all to challenge us, and I would rather just ignore the whole thing.

I'd be lying if I said I didn't want to see us blow them out- but I want us to win each game by a blowout. Close games are for when I'm a neutral observer. Wanting to see how much we can beat them by does not replace the memory of anticipating all those games in the past- 13 months ago we wanted to smack down June Jones for calling Tebow a "system QB". The history of this rivalry and it being the first conference game mean this is nowhere near Hawaii- but the sad state of our rival single handedly makes this a game anticipated far less than so many that have come before it.

I saw some activity on twitter where Jeremy Foley was asked if ESPNs college gameday was coming to Gainesville for this contest. If you, as a fan, actually thought that had a chance of happening, maybe we Gator fans have less perspective than I would like to think.
