Yes, that was a pun in the headline. Terrible, I know. But the story to take from this game is that we played in a tough environment against a bigger team. And as much as it was frustrating to watch, now that I’ve had some time to reflect on the game, it wasn’t that bad. We shot terribly. Most of the time, we are going to be a good shooting team. But our defense at least played well enough to keep us in the game. Or maybe the FSU facilities team just tightened both rims significantly, knowing if both teams shot well they had a better chance of winning the game…
But seriously, it isn’t even cool to call out Walter Hodge anymore. He’s a non-factor, and we need some leadership from somewhere. We need the Tim Tebow- run into the huddle you’re not a part of, and get your teammates to play at a higher level- type of leadership. Dan Werner does an awesome job of playing hard and doing the dirty work no one else wants to do, but he doesn’t elevate anyone’s play. And we are seriously lacking in the post, still, as we wait for Allan Chaney and Kenny Kadji to step it up, or for Eloy Vargas to get healthy and then step it up. And what sort of contribution do we get from Adam Allen?
The great news is that we are young. We have a little stretch here where we need to see some improvement, and then we need a victory over NC State to go into SEC play with 2 losses. Remember, that’s what I predicted. Then, depending on the conference matchups, we need to get to 10 conference wins. 12 would be ideal. If we only win 8 conference games again, we will be left out of the NCAA Tournament again. This team hasn’t shown anything incredible, but with our youth and with a star-caliber player, and great coaching, we can make some noise in the SEC. Getting Alabama, Arkansas, and Ole Miss at home should help.
