If we got to pick, choosing Tennessee to blow out was a great choice (75-62). Especially with NCAA selection committee member Jeff Hathaway in the crowd. The first half was close with Tennessee hitting 6 threes and the Gators having to score the last 7 points to enter the locker room tied. The second half was all about the Gators where they hit four 3 point shots in two and a half minutes to jump ahead 70-50 with 3 minutes left. Overall, a lot of good came out of this game and the Gators tacked on another top 25 win.
The big story of this game was Tennessee's big men getting into foul trouble with Wayne Chism only playing 15 minutes and Brian Williams playing 23 minutes. Chism collapsed when he got to the sideline after he fouled out from an injury that happened when he picked up his fourth foul. It was the first time I have ever heard the crowd at the O'Dome yell &lay down!& instead of &sit down!& when someone fouls out. This would seem like its in bad taste considering Chism's history of injuries; but Chism had no problems moving while he was on the court, and none of their athletic trainers went to check him out when he collapsed. Sorry Chism, if the ATs don't believe you are injured, I don't either.
As far as individual stats, Walker broke his shooting slump going 3-4 from the arc and 6-8 from the line (19 points). Dan Werner picked up where he left off on his slump and went 0-3 from the arc. To his credit, no air balls and his shots looked pretty solid just didn't connect. He also led the team with 4 assists. Macklin was a beast taking Tennessee's big men to school for the limited minutes that they were in and scored 13 points with 10 rebounds. I think a big difference came in the second half when Tyus became more active on both ends of the court, even if it didn't show up in the stats (8pts 8 rebounds). Chandler Parsons continued his great play and seemed to score at will. He also seemed to play more minutes at point that he generally has this season.
Beating Tennessee is great, beating Tennesee inside the paint is even better. I hate to say our NCAA chances look good now, because every time someone does we go on a mutiple game losing streak. We have now beat a team that shot over 40 percent from the arc, and whose big men were better than ours on paper. Before the game I said that our guards were going to have to shoot well for us to win this game, but I was proven wrong by our dominance inside. I think we win that game without the four 3's towards the end.
Saturday the Gators travel to Georgia for a chance to add another good road win. The game is at 4pm and is listed to be televised on SEC network.
