As I started earlier this season, throughout the offseason I'm going to give a quick rundown of the week's storylines, in case your not as OCD about Gators as those that get their up-to-the-second Gators news here. But even if you do, I hope I'll entertain you somewhat, give you some different perspectives, and throw in some other odds and ends to keep you interested.
The Gator Nation's Past Week
Florida basketball dropped two games last week to extend their losing streak to 3. The loss to Kentucky was expected (even if we can point to some late-game odd calls- a dubious charge on Boynton; a no-call turnover for Parsons- I am not sure we would have won anyway). The loss to Vanderbilt wasn't surprising either, but could have wrapped up an NCAA berth.
The Gator baseball team won their weekend series at Miami, 2 games to 1. These were good wins for Florida, and was a good series to build on as they set their team goals to Omaha.
The Gator Nation's Week to Come
The SEC Tournament starts tomorrow. Broadcast information for the games can be found here. We open with Auburn, which is a must-win game, as the SEC West was vastly inferior to the East this season, and we cannot afford to close the season with a bad loss and a 4 game losing streak. We likely need to win Friday evening, as well, against Mississippi State to ensure an appearance in the Big Dance. It is noteworthy that we were 6-0 v. the SEC West this season, and that the top 4 teams in the SEC East were 24-0 against the West. That being said, our previous game against Auburn was hardly a run away, and who know how we handle Mississippi State if Macklin doesn't out-play Varnado the way he did in the regular season. ESPN bracketologist Joe Lunardi said 'a pair should be plenty' in regard to wins Florida needs to lock up an NCAA appearance.
The baseball team hosts Charleston Southern this weekend. Florida should set a goal for a sweep, to roll into conference play which starts the following week. You can view the entire baseball schedule here.
Tim Tebow's ''new throwing motion'' will be unveiled at Florida's Pro Day March 17. Check G1 for all the relevant (and irrelevant, as it were) updates.
Go Cure Cancer. Go Gators
University of Florida researchers were at the center of this study showing that mixing energy drinks (such as Red Bull) with alcohol (let's say, Jagermeister) is an awful idea. I would contend it's a crime against the tastebuds, but then I love to partake of the licorice-flavored, smooth, horned-animal adorned ambrosia minus the stimulants, anyway. An informed drunk is a slightly safer drunk, and we at G1 are nothing if not educational. Stay away from mixing the stimulants and the depressants- all you'll do is become hyper-alert with awful decision making capabilities, leading to injury and saying things like 'you know, Georgia fans might be tolerable after all'. Georgia fans are NOT tolerable, and you should NOT mix Jager and Red Bull.
Gainesville's Own
Instead of giving a thumbs-up or a thumbs-down to anything myself this time around, I am going to leave this one up to you guys. In the last month or so, we've heard a lot about the University of Florida building statues to honor all of the Gator Heisman winners. Is it too early to erect a statue for Tim Tebow? (I'm aware that's the only use of the word 'erect' with 'Tim Tebow' that doesn't involve the phrase 'tebowner') Most of the argument against it seems to be 'hey, if Texas had that policy, they'd have a statue of Ricky Williams up already, and that would be awful because of off-the-field stuff'. While no one is suggesting Tebow is going to be taking up the ganja (OK, maybe the best new twitter account of 2010 is), I think the argument is one of precedent. Erecting a statue of Tebow immediately means that if we don't do so immediately for our next Heisman winner, we are somehow slighting him... and that, with typical athletes (Tebow being very atypical in his awesomeness) some delay in such grandiose enshrinement practices would be prudent. |
