Gators First Weekly Notes, Feb 18 2010 PDF Print E-mail

Thursday, 18 February 2010

As I started last week, each week I'm going to give a quick rundown of the week's storylines, in case your not as OCD about Gators as those that get their up-to-the-second Gators news here. But even if you do, I hope I'll entertain you somewhat, give you some different perspectives, and throw in some other odds and ends to keep you interested.

The Gator Nation's Past Week

The past week was disastrous for Gator basketball, as they lost two games in unimpressive fashion. First, they lost to South Carolina despite out-shooting and out-rebounding the Gamecocks, and continued awful free throw shooting and turnover problems (adding problems in the paint, and an effort problem) in a home loss to Xavier.

The depth issue at Florida (here was my off-season series of blogs on early departures of the Billy Donovan era: parts one, two, three, and four... #4 is the most recent/contains a summary) was exasperated as C Kenny Kadji underwent season-ending surgery. He had not played significant minutes most of the season. Early this season, I put Kadji on 'transfer watch'. I am not sure if this makes it more or less likely he does end up transferring (I've seen it go both ways), but my guess is he stays. We don't exactly have a lot of competition for playing time at center, so he could be a major player on next year's team.

Another week of Florida Gators basketball, another week of Gator fans griping about Dan Werner. I highly recommend you check out this piece by G1 contributor Jason Kirchhoff.

A big story since my last Weekly Notes entry was the addition of Teryl Austin as co-defensive coordinator of the Florida Gators football team. Until the couple of days before the hire, I had never heard of Austin. Which means I found this piece especially funny. And here was a 'getting to know' piece by Ben Volin of the Palm Beach Post about Austin. Welcome aboard, Teryl!

The Gator Nation's Week to Come

Tonight's 78-70 win over Auburn begins a crucial 6-day stretch for this Florida Gators basketball team. They play at Ole Miss on Saturday (noon ET, CBS) and Tennessee at home on Tuesday (9 ET, ESPN). The Gators are currently 7-4 in the SEC, and 2-6 against teams in the RPI top 50. They have 4 regular season games remaining against top 50 foes: @ Ole Miss, Tennessee, Vandy, and @ Kentucky. They likely need double-digit conference wins, and possibly more, to lock down an at-large bid to the big dance. Tonight's win was a positive step, but by no means a strong sign that they are ready to run this final gauntlet.

Gator baseball starts tomorrow with a weekend series against USF. You can check out original Gator coverage here at G1 all season long. Check out this Gator baseball season preview by Allen DeLaney.

Go Cure Cancer. Go Gators

Suddenly, the name of this section isn't as clever, as it came out in the past week that one of we Gators is fighting leukemia. Out of respect to Dwayne Schintzius- whose poster used to be prominently displayed in my room whilst a young'un- I will forego this section this week, and instead ask you to keep him in your thoughts and prayers. And if it takes more than a story about a misguided future sports blogger and his poster-style tribute to the Mulleted One to realize his singularity in sports, please read this piece by Pat Dooley and this piece in his hometown (Brandon) newspaper discussing his career. I regret not spending more time before such tragic circumstances discussing this influential (if enigmatic) figure of my early sports fanhood.

Gainesville's Own

This week's ''Gainesvillle's Own'' segment comes from a story in the Gainesville Sun where a man was arrested for telling a police dog to sit. I love the simple originality here, but I'm going to have to give a 'thumbs down' for disregarding the orders of GPD. Around my house, we may have frequently butted heads with GPD over various minor violations (usually noise complaints) and many at G1 have had run-ins with the law in various forms (usually involving alcohol violations, or retarded gameday traffic policies)... but you've got to respect the K-9 unit.
