High Hopes & Hindsight: Florida vs Tennessee Preview PDF Print E-mail

I'm really looking forward to embracing some of the great traditions at the University of Tennessee, for instance the Vol Talk (no walk), getting stuffed by the D, and crying Rocky Top all the way home.

Lane Kiffin's comments shouldn’t really bother Gator fans but it does make for some great fodder for drunken trash-talking… and further motivation of a team who is already favored by better than four touchdowns (-28.5). I'm not saying that the men in Orange and Blue are any more fired up for Tennessee because of Kiffin's comments, but maybe just a little more motivated to not let up when their feet are on the Vols' throats...

Coming off of a win over Troy (56-6), Florida(2-0, 0-0) has cruised to two easy victories this year putting up 118 points, over 1,200 yards and allowing only 9 total points. Three rushers (Demps, Rainey and Moody) are all averaging over 9 yards a carry and backup quarterback John Brantley has completed 75% of his passes for 3 touchdowns. Tebow has been, well Tebow, with 500 yards and 6 touchdowns in less than four quarters of play.

Tennessee (1-1,0-0) comes into the game after a loss against Pac-10 opponent UCLA. It's Lane Kiffin's first SEC game and it should be quite the introduction down in The Swamp (I can picture the homemade signs now...) Their offense has been a little shaky on the heels of Jonathan Crompton who has thrown five picks in his first two outings. The defense has been decent but will be tested early and often by one the nation’s most exciting offenses. And then further tested against the backups.

The Swamp will be extra loud and the Gators will look extra quick as they put points on the scoreboard early. The cameras will focus on Kiffin's expressions as he gets frustrated with him team's inability to keep up with Florida's spread offense and veteran defense. Fans watching the game on TV will be reminded of Kiffin's remarks, at least 8 times each half. Those of us in the stadium will forget that nonsense and watch as the Gators romp to their 5th straight victory over the Volunteers, and 10th win over them out the last 12 years in the Swamp.

The last laugh will be half way through the third quarter when Urban Meyer starts to send in the backups to finish Tennessee off and the stadium erupts in a rousing rendition of ''Rocky Top''

It will be a blast.

Half Time Score: Florida 35 - Tennessee 3

Final Score: Florida 48 - Tennessee 10

Could Urban have put in a more conservative game plan than he did against UT? Run the 2 and 3 gaps all day then send the fullback...I mean quaterback up the middle to get the 1st down. Maybe Urban's professional respect and relationship with Monte Kiffen runs deeper than we know and he was just giving an old mentor a break.

I think it's simply a game of give and take. Tennessee was obviously playing a "let's run the clock out and limit Tebow's time" type of game and Urban knew it immediately. Urban wisely understood that the game was already won, and did his part to maintain the status quo. Although it didn't "look pretty", it was effective and the correct thing to do.

Trust me, Urban knows what he's doing. He seemed ecstatic after the game and proud of the way his kids battled.
