Lane Kiffin may have gotten some of the 'bat-shit crazy' to rub off on him from his time under Al Davis.
In case you haven't heard about all of the goings-on today:
This is the video of Lane Kiffin accusing Urban Meyer of recruiting violations, and attempting to rub it in that he grabbed an extra recruit. Also, he's asking for a huge beat down in September, but that's when you play it backwards.
I first saw the whole story on Clay Travis' website, here.
Here is the Gainesville Sun with the UF reaction from Jeremy Foley (Athletic Director, and future financier of my mortgage) and from Jamie McCloskey, UF's NCAA compliance director. Here, is Jeremy Foley's official statement. Not about the mortgage thing, too bad. Someone fwd the link!
That's a lot of talking for a guy who's never won a game in the SEC, let alone a championship
Yesterday, Saurian Sagacity was already questioning the way Lane Kiffin has been angering folks around the SEC. Then to that list, they get something to add today. And beg the question, was Al Davis the sane one? Here is a list of what Al Davis said about Kiffin after firing him. Given a story that UT's NCAA Compliance director was not going to file a complaint against Meyer, Saurian Sagacity goes on to tell Kiffin to put up or shut up.
After being reprimanded by the SEC, Kiffin has apologized. In my opinion, the apology will not be remembered, the story will go on as 'Urban Meyer is a cheater' and whatever else. The damage is irreparable, and UF has every right to seek further repercussions.
The best quote was from Kiffin's reprimand by the SEC. Here it is:
The SEC said that Kiffin broke the conference's code of ethics with his comments at the breakfast.
"Coach Kiffin has violated the Southeastern Conference Code of Ethics," SEC commissioner Mike Slive said in a statement. "SEC Bylaw 10.5.1 clearly states that coaches and administrators shall refrain from directed public criticism of other member institutions, their staffs or players."
"The phone call to which Coach Kiffin referred to in his public comments is not a violation of SEC or NCAA rules. We expect our coaches to have an understanding and knowledge of conference and NCAA rules."
thoughts?
UPDATE 2/6: Besides the links about 'impersonating Nu'Keese by txt' that I posted below, I wanted to be sure to link to Clay Travis' excellent points about uniting the Vol fans. To be sure, Gatorsfirst was on the division of the Vols in September, as evidenced by this recap of a trip to Knoxville. But I disagree that Gator fans should ignore the comments. Urban Meyer is already wrongfully portrayed by most of our opponents as a liar, (not sure where the admittedly lame Urban Liar msg board taunt comes from) a cheat, a jerk, and classless. While he is exactly NONE of these things. I am glad there has been such a strong reaction, as the story has now become as much, if not more, about Kiffin than Meyer. As soon as this came out, and especially once it was shown to be false, I was mainly worried that this was one of those things that would stick with Urban on the recruiting trail- calling him a cheater- and not ever be remembered accurately. Thankfully, it seems as if that part of it will not be remembered, much as no one remembers Eddie Fogler, Mike Kryzywyzyzysyzski, and Roy Williams WRONGFULLY calling Billy Donovan a 'cheater'. In this case, it looks like the stink will actually stick to Kiffin, whereas no one remembers those other coaches acting up in Billy D's case.
UPDATE 2/10: There obviously has been a lot more written about this situation, but the latest development is that Lane Kiffin is the 'cheater'. Now, secondary violations are secondary violations... so if Kiffin didn't get everyone riled up during the Urban Meyer thing, this wouldn't have been a big deal. Now, you get a UT alum in Alabama calling for his immediate firing.

Great work on all the backmatter, JB. These links paint a CLEAR picture of "The Knutcase in Knoxville!" BTW...have you checked out the Vols' recruiting class? Looks like Kiffin is convinced that the offense is good to go. WOW. I know it's a different system, but these same players couldn't throw or catch LAST year.

A couple more links, I included them in the front page news update...
SI's Andy Staples on the matter. link
And the story of Kiffin impersonating Nu'Keese by txt during the visit, and pissing off his high school coach. These blogs should write themselves for the rest of his (presumably short) tenure. I say 'presumably short' as it's never good when all of the excitement for a program comes from a 95+ year old D-coordinator who's sure to retire soon, and a bunch of highly paid assistants who will end up as head coaches in the next 2 years, before they fully help Lane turn this thing around. Congrats on your bowl games in Shreveport the next two years, Vols fans... at least Lane's salary (very low for SEC head coaches) indicates the buyout won't be that much.

And why isn't the NCAA investingating this Nu'Keese affair that the PBP talks about? Something isn't kosher.
Lanie better learn how to say NCAA SANCTIONS, because that's what he's asking to have come his way.
Goose, I hope the Viles don't even win one game in 2009 - never mind talking about a bowl game in Shreveport. Make LK reap what he sows and get flatulent from eating a heaping plate of spiced crow that was found rotting in the bayous and swamps of the rest of the SEC before it wound up on his dinner plate.

UT self-reported recruiting violations. link
Sounds like Kiffin should have been concerned with his own actions than needlessly slandering a "rival".

I have been updating the blog, but it is not reflected in forum view. Check out the blog to get the links, but here is what I said:
