Two Florida Football Position Changes to Watch PDF Print E-mail

One offseason story for the Florida Gators offense was the separation of the Shake from the Bake from Florida's awesome Shake N' Bake combo- Jeff Demps would become the clear #1 RB, while Chris Rainey would play more of a WR role (the Percy position, if you will).

Another offseason worry was with the departure of Aaron Hernandez, who would step into the void at TE.

So why are we re-hashing old news? For one, you may not have been as deep into the nuances of the depth chart all summer as we are around these parts.

For another, CBS Fantasy College Football - where I completed drafts for leagues on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday- only yesterday changed Chris Rainey's position to WR, and Omarius Hines position to TE.

Needless to say, this slight adjustment has much more of a fantasy impact than it will on the way the game is played on Saturday.

Chris Rainey as a WR? OK, but he's still going to get carries. We already were throwing the ball to him in downfield routes a season ago.  He's much more valuable as a WR, which is more scarce (plus CBS standard rules require you to start 3).  There are few WRs who will approach or exceed 1,000 all-purpose yards, and more RBs who will approach those numbers.  Rainey was always a fantasy breakout candidate, now I'd say he's got to be owned in most formats based on the Percy Harvin potential in this role and the position change.

Omarius Hines as a TE? Well, converted QB Jordan Reed is hurt (himself moved from QB to TE a couple of weeks ago by CBS), and Hines is a big dude with a lot of time in our offense. One overlooked aspect of the Urban Meyer spread offense is the importance of the TE- splitting out wide, coming in as a blocker, etc. I would not be surprised if, even with a healthy Reed, Hines sees a significant amount of playing time at TE as he must have a very good working knowledge of the playbook. Note this is probably also why we've had good success moving athletic QBs to TE... the QB, by nature, already is thoroughly immersed in the offensive philosophy. (Want to know more about the importance of the TE in our offense? Listen to this interview with Chris Brown of SmartFootball on the Solid Verbal Podcast from the offseason).

The Hines move is huge, as he has almost no fantasy value at WR, but with the lack of quality fantasy TEs this season, he's a middle of the pack guy with 400 receiving yards, and a top option if he can approach Aaron Hernandez's 800 yards from last season. I picked him up for this week in a league where he was available, given the good matchup this week.
