It's going to be an all Euro final; pretty big surprise with the four powerhouse South American teams in the semi-finals. Netherlands knocked off Uruguay 3:2 today. The Spain vs. Germany game is tomorrow at 1:30 EST. Netherlands stuck strickly to their game plan today: dive; stay down; grab a leg; give ref puppy dog eyes. If it ends up being Germany and Holland, it is going to be a fun mix of explosive attacks and dive-and-whine soccer. Unfortunately the refs weren't going along with the dive plan today. Holland however was able to generate some offense to make up for it. This was two separate games. Heavy defense for the first 60 minutes was creating 3-on-7 situations halting both teams' attacks. Somehow it still ended up being 1:1 at half. Each goal was scored from outside by the respective team captain with little support. After 60 minutes it became a game of strong offensive zones and wild attacks. At the 70-minute mark Holland got a borderline offsides goal, followed 3 minutes later by powerful header making it 3:1. At 90'+2 Uruguay grounded one in. The final two minutes was an impressive showing of heart and offense by Uruguay, but with no luck, leaving it 3:2 Netherlands. Giovanni VAN BRONCKHORST, Netherlands's captain, opened hard. He fired a cannon from way outside on the left. It slipped just by the diving goalies fingers off the right post into the top corner of the net. A bit later Martin CACERES bicycle kicked DE ZEEUW in the face, ruining his day. At 41 minutes Diego FORLAN, the captain of Uruguay, answered with his own outside fireball. This one caught the goalie jumping the wrong way tying the game. Netherlands had an exciting missed flying header attempt to end the half at 1:1.
GK Maarten STEKELENBURG came all the way out of the box trying to clear an attack. Clear it he did not. Uruguay followed quickly with a chip on the ridiculously open net. Somehow VAN BRONCKHORST made it back to head it away. At 60 minutes the Dutch mounted a 3min offensive zone attack which brought in both full teams, with no goal. FORLAN fired another great shot on a free kick, bottom-left, with a strong save by STEKELENBURG. On the other end, Rafael VAN DER VAART got wide open inside. It was blocked out and ROBBEN could not follow it up. At the 70-minute mark Wesley SNEIJDER took an inside shot, with a questionable offsides on VAN PERSIE who nearly touched the shot on the way by. The replay showed a foot offsides, but no flag on the play. At 73', ROBBEN slammed a header in off the far post making the game look like a lost cause for Uruguay. But Uruguay would not stop.
Two minutes into injury time Maximiliano PEREIRA received a pass outside on a free kick and took full advantage. He grounded it straight through the crowd into the left corner. Uruguay intensely at the end but was not able to net a third goal. Netherlands 3:2. Outstanding game today. Sad to see Uruguay knocked off after such a strong performance.
MVP has to be Arjen ROBBEN today, along with best winger in the tourney award. 4 goals so far. He dominated 1-on-1 situations all day, and created all kinds of space and angles on goal. His footwork was a treat to watch. And of course, he put this game away with his giant header goal. Outstanding showing by Uruguay's Diego FORLAN. He basically carried his team to this position in the cup, and carried them through to late in the second half as well today. He was controlling the middle and firing shots from all over the field. Every time he shot it was flying on target to a different corner of the net. |
