Spain beat Germany 1:0 today. So the FIFA World Cup 2010 final will be Spain versus Netherlands on Sunday. Not so much to report for today's game. It was largely a midfield game, quick defense and very little offense. Germany had somewhere close to zero lightning strikes today. They did have a few fast breaks but nothing developed. Spain controlled the ball for most of the game, but weren't able to set up their famous 7 touch and score zone offense. They surprisingly scored on a corner kick flying header at 73'. This was the first time in the tourney that Germany had been scored on in the second half.
This will lead to an interesting final, both in style of play and history. Neither Spain nor Netherlands has ever made it to a final. And both teams have a unique style of play, very different from their past years. I have no idea who should be favored for the final. It is going to be a great game. I like Germany for the Match for 3rd.
FIFA World Cup 2010 Final Games:
- Germany vs. Uruguay
Match for 3rd - Sat, July 10 at 1:30 EST on ABC
- Spain vs. Netherlands
World Cup Final - Sun, July 11 at 1:30 EST on ABC
No dives today, no yellow cards, and only a few whistles. This was the cleanest, most well controlled, best reffed game so far in the Cup. The game opened with an exciting start. At 6 minutes PEDRO, on his first start of the tourney, slipped a ball to David VILLA in front of the goal. VILLA screamed in for a sliding shot but Manuel NEUER, Germany's goalie, said no. A bit later, Carles PUYOL missed a header attempt. Germany was not able to work up much offense in the first half. PEDRO ended the half with a blocked low shot up the middle; 0:0 at half.
The second opened up with a couple wide power shots from XABI ALONSO. Goal attempts were few and far between. Mesut OEZIL had a great break away opportunity tripped up at the edge of the box, no whistle. PUYOL lined up on the back edge of the box for the corner kick at the 73-minute mark. He sprinted in and flew through the air slamming a huge header into the back of the net. Ouststanding midfield play, a few missed shots and a header; that about summarizes it. Apologies, no drama or dirty plays to report.
Carles PUYOL is the no-brainer MVP today. He mopped up on defense and offense, and got a few good heads on the ball. His flying header was one of the top goals of the tourney, and the only score today. |
