Only one South American team made it out of the FIFA World Cup 2010 quarter-finals, barely, in a shootout. Uraguay sneaks by Ghana in a 1 (4):1 (2) shootout. Neder powered 2:1 over Brazil. Germany went blitzkrieg and destroyed Argentina 4:0. Spain ended up winning 1:0 over Paraguay in a bizarre game.

The upcoming semi-final games are:

  • Uruguay vs. Netherlands - Jul 6 2:30am (EST) on ESPN
  • Germany vs. Spain - Jul 7 2:30am (EST) on ESPN

Well to start off, Brazil got flipped hard by Netherlands, not sure Brazil should have been favored there. Robinho put Brazil up at the end of the first half taking advantage of a defensive mistake. In the second half the Dutch came out firing. Sneijder's free kick was deflected in off of Melo after a weakly deflected save by Cesar. Then later Sneijder took a corner out of the air and headed it into the back of the net. To rub it in Melo took a red card for stomping on Robben leaving Brazil short handed. The game ended 2:1 Netherlands.

Ghana just about knocked off Uruguay in a very close game. Both teams played excellently and Ghana nearly made it as the first African team to make the semi-finals. Ghana's Gyan floated a penalty kick into the top post leaving it tied 1:1 near the end of the game. In the shootout Gyan did take and score the first kick. But Ghana decisively lost the shootout, advancing Uruguay to the semi-finals.

As predicted Germany provided for a high scoring game. Their outstanding striking put them up 4:0 over Argentina. Count them up, Friedrich and Mueller scored one, Klose scored two. End of story.

Spain versus Paraguay went scoreless down to the wire after back-to-back-to-back penalty kicks. Spain stopped a Paraguay penalty kick late in the second half. The next play Spain got a PK, and had their score taken away on an offsides. Spain's second PK attempt was blocked. Villa scored for Spain at the 82-minute mark to end up 1:0.
